Dr. STONE Voice Actor Ryota Suzuki on Learning from Ryusui's Natural Leadership
Among all the anime screened at Japan Expo Paris, Dr. STONE SCIENCE FUTURE also brought its own guest with Ryota Suzuki, the voice of Nanami Ryusui. Along with a panel, Crunchyroll News was able to sit down with Suzuki to discuss his role in the entire Dr. STONE series, his time in France and more! How is your stay in France, and what kind of food did you try? Suzuki : First, it's much cooler than in Japan and much more sustainable. It's very humid in Japan in the summer, whereas here it's very dry and very pleasant. I ate an excellent boeuf bourguignon, then I had onion soup au gratin, which was also superb, and I had snails. The butter was very good. But I was impressed by the amount of food. With only one plate, I was never hungry after, so I've always had a full belly in France [laughs]. How did you land the Ryusui role? Suzuki : In Japan, before auditioning, we send a tape or recording with our voices. That's the first step. Then we go to the recording studio to meet the director and staff. That's what you usually do when you want to do voice acting. But in this case, I just sent in my recording, and I was immediately cast as Ryusui. RELATED: Dr. STONE Anime Collabs with Tokyo University of Technology This Summer How do you picture Ryusui’s evolution from the beginning to now? Suzuki : Ryusui is someone who exudes leadership. And since Senku wants to cross the sea, that's why he was depetrified. There's no great change in his character in particular. He's someone who's pretty convincing, a leader and that's stayed from the beginning. I follow that guideline. The further the story progresses, the more he steps aside to create a group spirit and succeed in achieving the same thing, but together. We see more and more of his good side. Do you happen to snap your fingers as much as Ryusui? Suzuki : When there's an event where I've just introduced myself, I snap my fingers as soon as I arrive. And, when I get up on stage, I sweat a lot from my hands, so sometimes it doesn't make the noise I'd hoped for. But yes, from time to time, I do practice [laughs]. RELATED: How Far Has Science Progressed in Dr. STONE? Did the role of Ryusui change your way of working on other projects? Suzuki : I've really professionalized my role by working, for example, on the power of my voice or how to change it. That's something I've managed to learn from Ryusui. There are a lot of new projects where I'm the same age as the other voice actors, yet I'm doing the voices of characters who are older. Ryusui really taught me how to have a voice that's convincing. Do you have a favorite opening or ending song in Dr. STONE ? Suzuki : It's Good Morning [New] World! because it's really the moment of Ryusui's return and the special episode . It brings back many memories and a special version was even made for this episode. What would be your role in a “Stone World”? Suzuki : Hunting. I would be a hunter. What would you like to get from Ryusui? Suzuki : His leadership. We don't have many opportunities to display leadership with others, so I think it would help me to get this skill.
