Based on the manga by Kei Urana and graffiti artist Hideyoshi Andou, Gachiakuta is the story of Rudo, a boy from the slums of an idyllic floating city known as the Sphere. Framed for a crime he didn’t commit and tossed into the rancid garbage pit far below the Sphere, Rudo will do whatever it takes to survive in the hellish depths so he can take revenge on the people who sent him there. GACHIAKUTA RECAP Gachiakuta Episode 17 Recap Summary The Gachiakuta After Show Podcast Episode 16 Previous Gachiakuta recaps Top of the Class Zanka is down for the count after Jabber stops holding back. His mind tosses him into the past when he was a student in a quiet city on the Ground. His family is part of the Nijiku Clan, a storied lineage that prides itself on virtue and steadfastness. Zanka’s father tells him that his brother and sister have already gone on to follow in his footsteps in the Hell Guard, which keeps humanity in line. He’s respected by the other students, but Zanka knows his ranking is because of hard work and not natural talent. The best student in the class gets to sit in the Golden Throne, and Zanka has his sights set on it. Frustrations Class begins and the teacher tells the students that they need a strong Hell Guard that can stand up to Givers. Along those lines, he introduces a talented new trainee to the class. Rumors have already started that although she grew up in the slums, her combat skills are impressive. A sparring competition proves the rumors true as Hyo defeats all of her classmates — including Zanka. She’s fast and relentless, and the teacher praises her prowess. As they complain about the new trainee, Zanka cheerfully interrupts to say that her skills are incredible and he needs to work harder. But in truth, Zanka is unreasonably angry at himself and he voices his frustration as he stands alone at the water fountain. At least, he thought he was alone. Hyo mildly tells him from behind that he’s bleeding. In a Hole Zanka didn’t mean for her to hear and tries to recover by making friendly conversation. He mentions that she’s a Golden Throne candidate, but Hyo genuinely doesn’t understand the appeal. Zanka tells her that tons of famous people have sat there, but she asks what good it is if people think he’s impressive. The future Giver is speechless as he considers. Later, the teacher sets out weapons and bids the class to choose the one that speaks to their intuition. Zanka replies that he saw the hole and felt like he needed to crawl into it. He chooses a plain-looking staff, assuming that the lesson was to pick something that looks like junk — but it was just a stick after all. Hyo chooses a katana. Feeling like a fool, he hides in the hole, which is where his listener finds him three days later. Fateful Meeting Zanka starts berating himself, yelling about how he’s nothing but mediocre. His listener asks him, can’t a mediocrity get better than a natural talent? And, he adds, you can’t know your strength until you know your weakness. The man stands, as does the girl with him — it turns out to be Enjin and Riyo. Before they leave, Enjin says they’ll be back one day and he hopes to hear how the average eclipsed the gifted. But it’s all part of a vivid hallucination, Jabber says with delight as he watches Zanka lie prone on the ground. The poisons he impaled him with keep him in that dream world. Elsewhere, Guita Hebby Fantasia finds herself in another chamber. The young Cleaner comes across something strange: a giant red, glowing object. Weapons, held by dismembered hands with fingers nailed to the handles, are stuck in its exterior. She stares in shock.
