Nintendo Switch 2 Has Best Console Start Ever With 10 Million Sold in Under 4 Months
The Nintendo Switch 2 is Nintendo’s fastest-selling console – and by a wide margin! Nintendo released its quarterly report for the first six months of fiscal year 2026 on November 4, revealing the first sales metrics for the Nintendo Switch 2 and its exclusive games. The reports, which cover the period up to September 30, show that the Switch 2 has sold 10.36 million units worldwide, more than double the original Switch’s 4.7 million units in the same time frame . Of those 10.36 million Switch 2s sold since its release in June, 2.35 million were sold in Japan, 3.68 million in the Americas, 2.40 million in Europe, and 1.93 million in the rest of the world. Nintendo previously forecasted that they’d sell 15 million units in the first fiscal year, but have now upped that forecast to 19 million units and are upping production on the console as we head into the holiday season. Even then, it seems that Nintendo is being conservative with its forecasted sales numbers, which look likely to exceed that amount. An interesting metric that Nintendo provided in the presentation was the breakdown of who bought the Switch 2. According to the Kyoto game maker, 84% of people who bought a Switch 2 also had a Switch, with over a quarter of that number having first purchased their Nintendo Switches in 2017.  RELATED: Nintendo Switch 2 Sells Over 3.5 Million Consoles in Just 4 Days On the game side, Nintendo’s report is only up until September 30, so Pokémon Legends: Z-A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition sales are not included, Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza are, though, and they have done quite well for Nintendo. Mario Kart World is the fastest-selling Mario Kart game, with 9.57 million copies sold, including pack-in versions and digital sales, resulting in an over 90% attach rate. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe , the current fourth-best-selling game of all time, took nearly a year to reach that amount. World is far outpacing Deluxe and might one day take that podium finish. Donkey Kong Bananza, on the other hand, has sold 3.49 million copies since it was released a month after the release of the Switch 2. Nintendo believes that both titles are “evergreen” for the Switch 2 going forward. Outside of video games, Nintendo continued to solidify its commitment to being an IP producer, which the company refers to as “entertainment.” Nintendo aims to utilize its characters and real-life experiences to attract more people to the Switch and its games, viewing films and its stores as means to expand the Nintendo ecosystem. On the film side, Nintendo states that it is continuing to “prepare for the ongoing release of movies in the future” with a consistent slate of films. Nintendo is working directly with film studios and producers, fronting up part of the money themselves. This gives the company more control and better returns if the film is successful, as seen with The Super Mario Bros. Movie .  Currently, Nintendo has two films announced to be in production: the second Mario film, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie , which is set to be released on April 3, 2026 , and the live-action The Legend of Zelda , which is scheduled for a May 7, 2027 release .  Source:  Nintendo IR
